Air Studios - Rupert Coulson

BY CG

Tell us a bit about Air Studios, why do you love working there?
I have been working at Air for a very long time! I've seen it change from a mainly rock, pop and band studio, into (in my opinion) the finest film scoring studio in Europe, if not in the world. Having been a part of and witnessed the evolution first-hand it will always be a close and dear friend to me.

Of all the projects you’ve worked on (Film Scores, TV soundtracks, Artist and Band albums)  which is your favourite? Why?
Obviously all the Rage Music projects with Paul Leonard-Morgan are my massive favourites! Apart from that I did spend time at Air Montserrat in the Caribbean where I was lucky enough to work on an album by the Rolling Stones. That was a laugh. The album is called Steel Wheels and I even appear in the video for the first single Mixed Emotions. I'm at the back of the control room in a stripy shirt nodding along to the music like one of those brainless nodding dogs you see in the back of some cars. I think for various reasons that my legal representatives advise me not to go into, that has to be a favourite.

Who or what inspires you?
Melody

Where is your happy place?
The Caribbean

We have an unexpected day off from mixing a soundtrack with you at Air, where would you take us, what would we do?
A trip down to the South Bank for lunch at the restaurant at Tate Modern then walk back across Waterloo Bridge for the best view of London.

What do you love about living and working in London?
A couple of weeks ago I went to the theatre on Tuesday (The Architect at The Old Vic) football on Wednesday (Arsenal v Barcelona) and a Blues/Rock night at the Borderline on Thursday. Lots to do…

Aside from Music, what other things (creative or otherwise) do you like to do?
One thing I definitely do love is having friends over for supper/lunch. Eating, drinking and talking rubbish. Stir fry veg and salmon. Or a tray of roast veg or a BBQ – fish mainly or some sossys. Always accompanied by a drink or two.

Before you go...

What was the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Al Green at the Royal Festival Hall in the late Eighties or Portishead at Latitude last year.

What is your guilty pleasure TV show do you secretly watch?
I listen to the Archers!

What is the most played track on your iPod/iPhone?
Senorita - Justin Timberlake
Fun For Me - Moloko
Rocket or A&E or anything really by Goldfrapp
Rudimental
C.Duncan

If you could bring back one musician from the dead, who would it be?
Claude Debussy

If you had to live in a different city (not London), where would you choose?
New York. Proper 24 hour city. Mental.
